If you're tired of hearing about the righteous fit that Irma just threw in Florida, or how Harvey harrowed Houston, you are safe to continue reading. This story isn't about Hurricanes. It's about you and me, and who we love.
When a storm approaches, and your mother and father sit directly in its path, you can be 1,865.6 miles away, and more frightened than if you were standing in the cool, quartz-white sand before the Gulf Of Mexico as it stirs and blackens the sky above. From here, in Taos, New Mexico, this most recent hurricane, well, she looked...hungry. And sick with rage. The radar weather graphic looked like a psychotic parrot's eye; indifferent to all the love that lives below in a cold and clinical way. I didn't know that looking on from afar could feel this way.
When a storm approaches, and the older, delicate lives you love lay directly in the bully's path, everything in life that doesn't matter gathers together into one being, jerks its chair back from the table, stands up, and quits. And you don't care. At all. Even more, you realize in a brand-new way that you never did. Something inside rises up and speaks to the worry: "Don't let the door hit 'ya!"
When a storm approaches, and over one-hundred-thousand lives that a million more are loving lay directly in the bitch's path, you realize this isn't some malevolent weapon being visited upon you the way you pretended in storms of yesteryear. Because this time, you know the following truth in the marrow of your bones: It's the manner in which you've been living that created her. You are her parent, her guru, and her god. Maybe you worked recklessly hard to create her; in the bedroom, or the kitchen, or the car. Or you might have sloppily phoned in your performance. It's no matter now because - as sure as the day is long - she got made. The DNA is a match. She's yours.
Time to duck, cover and flee from her anger, all the while knowing that she learned such behavior...from you. The silly debate's finally over. That's the truth pictured below, and it's approaching.
